As promised in the New Year Sudoku-X thread, here is the last of Ruud's series of themed puzzles. The earlier ones can be found at Valentine, Christmas Tree and New Year Fireworks. The Valentine puzzle is by far the easiest of these; it can be solved by only writing in the solutions for each of the cells.

Once again, nice artwork by Ruud!

Thanks enxio27 for the code strings. She told me that the grid pattern is Taiken-X.

Ruud dubbed this grid pattern "Taiken", or "circle". He published eight such puzzles that I am aware of, including several diagonal and several Clueless variants. This was the first Taiken he published, appearing on the Sudoku Specials page of his Sudocue Web site on 8 April, 2007. Richard's SudokuSolver refers to this grid pattern as "Gattai-21", because of the 21 constituent grids.

Andrew started this puzzle before I did, so he's a bit further ahead. I'm finding it slow going so far.

This was the largest sudoku I've solved (so far). It was also a bit harder than Ruud's Christmas Tree and New Year puzzles. I used a hidden triple and occasional pointing pairs for this puzzle; for the earlier ones I didn't need more than hidden pairs and occasional pointing pairs.

Thanks enxio27 for posting the code string and saying that SudokuSolver has a Gattai-21 grid pattern; it also needs to be set for diagonal before importing the code string. I was able to use SS to check my solution. It takes almost 1,500 steps!
